The most distinctive custom is the blanket rule. Attendees may place a blanket on the lawn beginning at 7:00 a.m. on the Wednesday of a concert. Blankets placed earlier may be removed, and organizers ask guests not to move spaces that have already been claimed.

That rule tells us more about Malaga Cove than a generic suggestion to arrive early. The lawn is limited, and the event has developed a clear local system for sharing it.

A few practical details make the evening smoother:

• Use low-back beach chairs unless sitting along the outer edges or rear of the lawn.
